Resilient Telecommunications
The Government's Strategy for enhancing the resilience of
telecommunications
Strand 3. A High Integrity Telecommunications System (HITS)
A High Integrity Telecommunications System (HITS) is being planned to
provide a highly resilient communications backbone between Strategic
Co-ordination Centres, Regional Operations Centres and the Centre. The
resilience is obtained through a hybrid of terrestrial ('fixed')
and satellite bearers. Current thinking involves permanent equipment being
installed at multi-agency response centres complemented with deployable
satellite equipment. The deployable equipment is envisaged to be used in
the event that a main centre becomes unavailable (possibly because a major
incident has occurred in the immediate vicinity) in which case, operations
fall-back to alternate locations.
